Image and Registration Department, Rijksmuseum.
Frans Pegt studied at the Fotovakschool (School of Photography) in Apeldoorn. After graduation he continued his education at the Willeam De Kooning Academy of Art in Rotterdam, where he majored in visual communication and fine arts. At the start of his career in 1983 he worked as a professional photo equipment salesman at Capi Lux Vak. He started as an independent advertisement photographer in 1989. As such, in 1996 he was among the first in the Netherlands to make the transition to digital photography. Being responsible for high-quality output, he focused on color management and print work output in a digital workflow.
In 2007 Frans started working for the Rijksmuseum where he is as a collection photographer responsible for photographing objects and paintings from the museum’s collection. He and the team works on the implementation of a standardized workflow for photographing objects. He considers it a welcome challenge to photograph fine art objects using standardized guidelines, and he strives for the highest quality possible. He is fascinated by the use of photography as an instrument in a creative process and by making an object and it’s story shine.
Frans developed a workflow for the photography of sick glass in collaboration with the glass conservation department. He is involved in the photography of costumes from the Rijksmuseum collection. In recent years he has photographed the collection of Japanese lacquer boxes that is be published in a book in 2020. His photography of silver and glass is praised. Since 2021 he has specialized in 3D scanning and photogrammetry. He is setting up a workflow for this that will function as a standard at the Rijksmuseum. This work in close collaboration with conservators, scientists and curators.
